As we observe the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania, most of our hearts are full, and our thoughts centered on the impact this has had on our world. These run the gamut from the sublime to the ridiculous: from remembering the horrifyingly senseless death on that day, to reflecting on how we now must prepare ourselves for a simple journey by aircraft with the increased restrictions; from sending American men and women in uniform into harms way on the battlefield, to having to comply with new laws such as The Patriot Act.

Not to mention the fear factor. I've heard more than a few people express with a degree of certainty that it's only a matter of time until another attack becomes imminent, and indeed may include a more devastating approach, ie. weapons of mass destruction.

My personal feeling? I think our country has, overall, been prudent to have become more vigilant and careful. I think we have a right to defend ourselves, and make every good and honorable attempt to exact justice from those that attack us.

But as Christian Americans, shouldn't our thinking go a couple steps further? Romans 8:15 says, "For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear {emphasis mine}, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by Him we cry, 'Abba, Father.'"

So, as far me and my house, this season of reflection and memorials will certainly be observed; but we choose the fear of the Lord, NOT of the world.

My prayer is that you do likewise.
