LUKE 1:26-38; 46 -55
We want to look at two things today regarding Mary, the mother of Christ:
· The importance of the virgin birth (Luke 1:26-38)
· Mary’s relationship with God (Luke 1: 46-55)
THE VIRGIN BIRTH
Both Matthew and Luke document the fact that Mary’s pregnancy was a miraculous one; conceived of the Holy Spirit: (read matt 1:20-21; Luke 1: 35)
WHY WAS THIS IMPORTANT?
Because sin enters humans in two ways:
· Through giving in to temptation
· Through birth
Sin is passed on through the seed of man, from one generation to another.
If the birth of the savior and messiah was to produce a sinless being, He had to not only live a sinless life, but He must be born outside of the chain of sin.
In other words, His birth had to bypass the seed of man completely.
God could’ve come to the world some other way. But He didn’t. He chose this way to underscore the deity of Jesus. That’s why Jesus referred to himself so many times as “the son of man.” Not to show that he arrived out of the seed of man, but that he came through the lineage of man, and could therefore go on to live life as a human man, and experience the things we do as humans, so that He could have victory over temptation.
He had to be able to be “man”, born of a woman, and therefore subject to temptations, so that he could show us how to resist, but still bypass Adam's seed.
Now understand this: God did not come to earth through the virgin birth to withstand sin supernaturally in his life. He came through the virgin birth to bypass the generational sin that all men are doomed with, then went on to live a sinless life!
Jesus still had the human nature in him to succumb to temptation, if He so chose. Otherwise, why did the devil go and tempt him for forty days in the desert? The devil knew who He was, and God had given the devil free reign to tempt all men, including Jesus. If the devil knew Jesus for what He was, then the devil would’ve known that it would be pointless to tempt Him if it had been supernaturally impossible for Jesus to sin.
Now, didn’t Mary have sins in her life? Yes, because for one thing she was born with the generational sin passed down from Adam through her father. Did she have sins that she committed? Possibly. But the Bible says God found favor with her, so we know she was devoted to Him and He gave her a blessing for it. My own conclusion is that Mary was probably almost the perfect woman, who rarely, if ever, knowingly sinned. But I don’t know. Unlike all my other biblical heroes, Mary’s personal sins are not recorded in scripture.
MARY’S RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD (LUKE 1: 47-55)
The song of Mary, also called the “Magnificent”, is a thing of beauty that shows us the depth of Mary’s devotion to God, and the reason He found so much favor in her: In a nutshell, Mary talks about God’s character and what He has done, is doing, and will do.
She never talks about herself, only to humbly say that because of God’s character, she is blessed.
We all need to take a lesson from Mary’s song. Sing and speak about God and His character, and watch temptation flee from us!
